Devourment, a pioneering force in the brutal death metal scene from Dallas, Texas, made a significant mark with their 1999 album “Molesting the Decapitated” which followed a demo and two promo releases. The album is notable for its brutally heavy riffs, guttural vocal style and intense drumming, which helped to define and popularize the slamming death metal style characterized by its slow, crushing breakdowns and percussive heaviness. Its provocative album art and unapologetically graphic themes also pushed the boundaries of shock value in death metal. “Molesting the Decapitated” not only solidified Devourment’s reputation for pushing sonic and thematic limits but also set a benchmark for the slam genre, influencing generations of new bands worldwide.
26 years after its initial release, Devourment will perform the album “Molesting the Decapitated” in its entirety at Maryland Deathfest XX, May 22—25, 2025 in Baltimore.
