Old Man’s Child will appear at Maryland Deathfest 2026 for a rare U.S. festival appearance, bringing Galder’s Norwegian black metal project back into focus after years of silence. In this short interview, Tom Rune Andersen, aka Galder, discusses reconnecting with the band’s music, the fans who kept it alive, and what the return means now.
After years of silence around Old Man’s Child, what surprised you most emotionally when you started reconnecting with this music again?
What surprised me the most was the fans. They never forgot about Old Man’s Child. If anything, the dedication feels even stronger now than it did back when we were last active. The band has always been very close to my heart, and I’ve been waiting for the right time to bring it back. When we look out into the crowd and see people singing along to lyrics that are 25 years old, it really hits you. In some cases, they probably know the songs better than I do at this point. That kind of connection is something you don’t take for granted, and it definitely makes coming back feel meaningful.
This will be your first Maryland Deathfest appearance. What do you hope the Maryland Deathfest crowd understands about Old Man’s Child that may have been missed while the band was inactive?
Old Man’s Child has always been about creating a certain atmosphere and identity, not just playing songs. It’s not something that was ever meant to follow trends or stay visible all the time. I think the time away maybe made it easier to overlook that, but hopefully the live show will make it clear what the band really represents.
After years of silence, does bringing Old Man’s Child back feel like reclaiming something, proving something, or closing a wound that was never really closed?
It doesn’t really feel like proving or reclaiming anything. It’s more about continuing something that never fully disappeared. The band has always been there in the background, and this is just bringing it back into focus again.
