Return From The Abyss
Thursday May 21, 2026 @ Nevermore Hall
Rising from the early 90s Chicago underground, Avernus emerged as one of the earliest US pioneers of melodic death/doom metal, standing alongside the genre’s European torchbearers. Their sound, steeped in sorrow, atmosphere, and melodic weight, captured a haunting balance between crushing heaviness and mournful beauty. While not inventing the style, their early work helped establish a North American presence for a genre otherwise dominated by European acts, placing them in the same lineage as bands like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Anathema, and Skepticism.
Their early EP “Sadness” became a cult classic, a release that encapsulated their ability to convey profound melancholy through crushing riffs and soaring melodies. After years of silence, they returned with the full-length “Grievances” (2024), an album that reclaims their signature atmosphere while expanding their sound with a refined and powerful emotional depth. The comeback has been widely celebrated, reaffirming their place as a vital and enduring voice in the death/doom tradition.
Their live return promises a stirring journey through grief and grandeur, delivering their melodic weight with a resonance few can match. Avernus will perform at Maryland Deathfest XXI on Thursday May 21, 2026 at Nevermore Hall.
